Children's book covers, that earn the shelf.
Hand-drawn covers tuned to age band (0-5, 6-8, 9-12) — readable at thumbnail, framed for the shelf, character-led so a four-year-old picks it up before the parent does.

More about our children's book cover design work.
Our children's book cover design is run by a kids' book cover illustrator and a designer who together have shipped covers for picture book, early-reader, chapter-book and middle-grade titles to KDP, IngramSpark and trade lists. We work with author-illustrators, parent self-publishers and small children's imprints. Most covers take three to six weeks from brief to print-ready files.
How age-band cover design actually changes the brief
Age-band cover design isn't a matter of taste; it's a commercial decision. A picture book cover (ages 3-5) needs to read at thumbnail size on a parent's phone in the Amazon app. An early reader cover (ages 5-7) puts the protagonist front-and-centre because children at that age recognise characters before titles. A middle-grade cover (ages 8-12) carries more typographic weight and competes with trade titles on a bookshop table. The brief shifts at each band.
A KDP children's cover has to clear specific technical bars — a minimum image resolution, a maximum aspect ratio, a safe area for the price sticker — and a bookshop-ready cover for IngramSpark has its own jacket-wrap requirements with spine, back cover, ISBN block and trim safe zones. We build both versions from the same master illustration so the printed and digital books match.
Working with the right kids' book cover illustrator
Not every illustrator is the right fit for every book. A studio that does dreamy watercolour bedtime work is not the right place for a bright graphic middle-grade adventure. We assign from a small bench of children's illustrators we know personally, and we'll show you three sample portfolios with the proposal so you choose the hand as well as the studio.
Deliverables: print-ready PDF jacket for KDP and IngramSpark, ebook cover JPG at platform spec, and full copyright assignment on final payment.
Questions we are asked.
Short, honest answers. Anything else, send to contact@ebookwriting.ai.
What does the starting figure include?
At ebookwriting.ai, the starting children's cover fee of $420 covers an illustrated children's ebook cover with three concept sketches, two revision rounds on the chosen direction, hand-lettered or typeset title treatment, and final delivery at full resolution.
How long does a children's cover take?
Three to five weeks from brief to final art, including time for concept sketches, your feedback, colour rendering, and lettering. We schedule a slow proofing pass because children's covers are read at thumbnail size and need careful balance.
What if the first concepts don't capture the character?
If the three initial directions don't land, we run a second concept round at no charge. Children's covers depend on getting the character right, and we'd rather restart the sketches than carry a half-right hero through to final art.
Who owns the cover art?
You do. Full rights for digital and print use transfer to you on final payment. We keep a portfolio copy unless you ask us not to.
What deliverables come at the end?
Layered source files, a flattened high-resolution master, ebook-store sized exports, and a print-ready file if you've commissioned the paperback or hardback version.
Will the cover read well at thumbnail size?
Yes. Every concept is reviewed at retailer thumbnail size before we commit to colour, because that's the size most parents will actually see. Anything that gets lost at 200 pixels is simplified before the final render.
